Conservative treatment with compression bandages or stockings may be required for acute thrombosis or active ulceration. Usually, bandages are left in place for one week intervals until the problem resolves. Special dressings will be used for ulcers. Wear a sock over the stocking to prevent rubbing a hole in the foot. Many patients with uncomplicated varicose veins can gain adequate relief from symptoms by wearing appropriate compression stockings. This particularly applies to older patients. Low compression garments are strongly advised during any travel over more than a short distance.
